In the summer 2002 issue of Xavier magazine, we recounted the story of former football standout Walter Mainer who took in the three children of his slain daughter, Cheryl Dawson. A fund was set up to pay for the children’s tuition at a Catholic school in western Cincinnati. It has now topped $12,000. The Mainers, who were near retirement, say they’re astonished at the response from old friends and acquaintances, many of whom they haven’t heard from in years. It has been an adjustment for all, they say, but the children now have more good days than bad days and are slowly realizing that the life they’re living now is the way it should have been all along—free of fear and full of love.
