Reunion Weekend

Caroline Purtell

In June, the University welcomed back alumni with class years ending in either a “0” or “5” for Reunion Weekend. There was, however, an exception. “Charlie O’Leary called me and said he wanted to organize a reunion for the 1955 football team because he said they were the best football team ever,” says Dianne Fisk, director for parent and constituent relations.

The committee of former football players, made up of O’Leary, Jack Rupert, Steve Junker, Vince Sodd and Gene Terry, had their own reunion of sorts when they took over the alumni office one evening to call former teammates. Fisk supplied the pizza and beer.

More than 60 percent of the team gathered for a mixer on Friday night at Ryan’s Pub in the Gallagher Student Center and a cocktail party before the Reunion Weekend dinner on Saturday in the Cintas Center. “We were one of the last great football teams at Xavier,” says O’Leary, a former halfback and 1956 graduate. “We beat some very good teams—Boston College was undefeated before they played us, and it’s always fun to beat Cincinnati.”
