Desiree Vick’s day job counseling people with disabilities is intense and fulfilling. After work and weekends, though, it’s all about the food.
Cooking, dining out, writing about food and photographing it are Vick’s passions. Five years ago she created an outlet for those passions—a food blog called Steak N Potatoes Kinda Gurl that feeds her creativity, her soul and her stomach all at once.
The blog is a reflection of Vick’s tastes and interests, which, as the blog’s name indicates, are more about taste than nutrition.
“I don’t post healthy recipes,” she says. “I post a lot of recipes that are more about comfort food—meat, potatoes, and I love desserts and baked goods.”
Along the way, Vick, a 2014 grad who holds two degrees from Xavier—a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in clinical counseling—has learned a few things about blogging, and about herself. Like never use a flash on a food photo, and how to take someone else’s recipe and make it her own.
She’s also learned that readers want to know who’s behind the recipes as much as they want to learn about the recipes themselves.
That’s why she includes tidbits on her fiancé and her family, and why she published her life’s bucket list (“Learn to surf” and “have a child” are on it) alongside her recipe and restaurant bucket list.
“I love it so much,” she says, “because it’s a chance to do photography, which I love, and writing, and the food and the recipes.”
