Irish Education

Martin McGuinness, the former commander in the Irish Republican Army who helped negotiate peace in Northern Ireland and became deputy first minister of the newly created Northern Ireland Assembly, came to Xavier earlier this year.

McGuinness spoke for about an hour in the Conaton Board Room about his life and his troubled country—which seem to run parallel courses—about education, about the development of his relationship with Protestant leader Ian Paisley and even about if what he learned in bringing peace to Ireland could be applied to the Middle East.

“The only way to confront political disorder is to bring about structures of process that will permit dialogue that will end situations that result in the needless deaths of people who are dying because of the failures of our political processes,” he said.
